Gloriana is a Melbourne-based chamber choir founded in 1994 by its director Andrew Raiskums. Gloriana’s programs traverse a wide range of genres and styles but focus on the acappella performance of Renaissance and contemporary choral music. The warmth and excellence of the choir’s performances have been regularly praised by audiences and critics alike. With its stone and timber interior and heritage-listed Harrison organ, St Mark’s Anglican Church Fitzroy is an ideal venue for Gloriana's 2008 concert series.

Into the Light: Music of mystic calm and transcendental beauty by composers who, searching for new sounds and modes of expression, took music into entirely new realms. Josquin’s Missa L’homme armé sexti toni will be accompanied with a number of works by Eastern European, Baltic and Scandinavian composers. Ligeti’s Lux aeterna, first heard to memorable effect in Kubrik’s 2001 A Space Odyssey, uses a 16-part choir to create a shimmering haze of sound. Rautavaara’s Die Erste elegie is a luminous setting of one of Rilke’s most magical poems. Works also by Arvo Pärt, Sven-David Sandström and the Australian premiere of Pēteris Vasks’ heartfelt Pater noster.
