Glory of Italy: A celebration of choral music from Italy’s Golden Age. Spectacular multi-choral works by Gabrieli, excerpts from Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers, Palestrina’s revered Stabat Mater and motets by Gesualdo. At the centre of the program is the Melbourne premiere of Ildebrando Pizzetti’s Requiem (1922), a serene and beautifully crafted work that draws inspiration from the music of sixteenth century composers.

In Memoriam: music of tribute and reflection.
Handel’s The ways of Zion do mourn, written
in 1737 for the memorial service of Queen Caroline, consort of George II, is
a rarely heard gem, distinguished by its perfection of form and sincere depth
of emotion. Herbert Howells’ Take him earth for
cherishing, written shortly after the assassination of John F Kennedy,
is one of the most moving acappella works of the twentieth century. Also Sheppard’s Media
vita and American composer Eric Whitacre’s When
David Heard, an astonishing work that moves from textures of murmuring
softness to climaxes of elemental power. Downloadable

Into the Light:
Music of mystic calm and transcendental beauty by composers who, searching
for new sounds and modes of expression, took music into entirely new
realms. Josquin’s Missa L’homme
armé sexti
toni will be accompanied with a number of works by Eastern European,
Baltic and Scandinavian composers. Ligeti’s Lux
aeterna, first
heard to memorable effect in Kubrik’s 2001
A Space Odyssey, uses
a 16-part choir to create a shimmering haze of sound. Rautavaara’s Die
Erste elegie is a luminous setting of one of Rilke’s most
magical poems. Works also by Arvo Pärt, Sven-David Sandström
and the Australian premiere of Pēteris Vasks’ heartfelt Pater
noster.
