Gloriana is a Melbourne-based chamber choir founded in 1994 by its director Andrew Raiskums. Gloriana’s programs traverse a wide range of genres and styles but focus on the acappella performance of Renaissance and contemporary choral music. The warmth and excellence of the choir’s performances have been regularly praised by audiences and critics alike. With its stone and timber interior and heritage-listed Harrison organ, St Mark’s Anglican Church Fitzroy is an ideal venue for Gloriana’s 2010 concert series.

Missa Mexicana: Gloriana presents our first-ever program of American music. From the Mexican Baroque comes Juan de Padilla’s Missa ego flos campi, or the Missa Mexicana as it has become known; a work distinguished by its infectious rhythms and sunny harmonies. From Argentina we hear Alberto Ginastera’s powerful Lamentations of Jeremiah and a scintillating work for double choir by Osvaldo Golijov. Also included are Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei - a transcription the composer made of his celebrated Adagio for Strings, and three works by Eric Whitacre, including When David heard; a work of staggering range and emotional force.
